A unique trio combining trumpet, trombone, and guitar, Ensemble Three has earned a reputation as an "inspiring example of forward-thinking classical music culture," recognised through the Melbourne Recital Centre Contemporary Masters Award and a showcase by ABC Classic FM at the International Rostrum of Composers. Their innovative performances and ambitious commissioning agenda seek to elevate the work of emerging composers and musicians from historically underrepresented demographics.
Ensemble Three’s debut album, Midnight Songs (2016), was described by CutCommon as an "intriguingly beautiful record" that "hold[s] the listener enthralled." Their second album, Despite Our Silent Elders (2018), marked a shift toward the use of electric guitar, a sonic direction further explored in their concept album Voodoo Sonnets (2021), which intertwines the legacies of William Shakespeare and Jimi Hendrix. Guitarist and ensemble member Ken Murray's recent release of Singing Stone: The Music of Christopher Sainsbury (ABC Classic, 2025) features Ensemble Three on the title track. Ensemble Three is currently recording for a 2026 album release featuring works by Leilehua Lanzilotti, Caerwen Martin, Alan Holley, Melody Eötvös, Rudresh Mahanthappa, and Yihan Chen.
Ensemble Three has maintained an active international profile through performances and collaborations across Australia, Asia, the United States, and Europe, including past appearances at Tokyo's Born Creative Festival. Their extensive commissioning catalogue includes more than 30 works by Australian composers, including recent work with the Ngarra-Burria First Peoples Composers Program. They have also developed numerous international commissions and partnerships, collaborating with composers and institutions in the United Kingdom, the United States, and Asia to broaden the ensemble's global creative reach.
The members of Ensemble Three - Don Immel (trombone), Joel Brennan (trumpet), and Ken Murray (guitar) - all serve on the music performance staff at the Melbourne Conservatorium of Music, University of Melbourne.
